GRAMOPHONE Rebranding

The internet has definitely changed the music industry. In the late 90s, it made music ‘sharing’
all over the world so simple, not to mention free. The music industry was depriving along with
the technological advances.

In 2001, Steve Jobs introduced the iPod and iTunes software charging 99 cents for each track
downloaded. In a way Steve Jobs saved the dying music industry. However, the downloading
was bypassing the retailers, cutting out the traditional distribution chain that existed with
physical product like CDs and cassettes.

Over the years many music stores have closed down due to poor business not just locally but
globally. Recently, I read somewhere on a forum about a local music store called ‘Sembawang music
center’ closing down after being in the music retail industry for more than 20 years. And, people
on the forum are commenting that ‘gramophone’ might just be the next.
